Understanding your test results
Common questions about latency, routes and test addresses.
What do ping and traceroute show?
Ping measures the round-trip time to an address and shows how many packets receive no reply. Traceroute shows the intermediate hops along the path to that address. Use both tests to assess the connection to your chosen location.
Why is an IP or a particular hop not responding?
Servers and network equipment may limit or block ICMP replies. A missing ping reply or asterisks in traceroute do not necessarily mean the server is unavailable. If later hops respond, the route continues.
Will my server use exactly the same route?
Each test IP corresponds to the listed location and service type and helps you assess the network before ordering. Your server’s actual route and latency may differ depending on the facility, network configuration, provider and time of the test.
How do I test the connection from my own computer?
Run the provided commands on your own device. Online tests on this page run from an external Globalping probe, not your computer. When choosing a location, focus on tests from the network your project will use.
